At some point, you have to take chances. Green's season long struggle to put the ball in the net finally came back to fully haunt them on Tuesday night in Plain Twp.
The Bulldogs were hardly dominated in this game. They were in the ascendancy late in the first half and for large parts of the second. A tactical switch at the half had opened gaps in GlenOak and made space for GHS to get forward. They did, but shots on target were hard to come by.
That mattered when GlenOak struck twice in quick succession late in the second half. Green finally answered the bell off a Ray Maynard header. It looked as if a lifeline was handed to the Bulldogs when the refs conferred after Giuseppe Spano was caught in the box with 41 seconds left, but an admittedly soft penalty wasn't on the cards.
Ultimately, that's the risk you run when you can't put one away. Green emerges from this game chastened, but ready looking forward to a chance to stun everyone with a shot at #1 in the state Hudson on Saturday.
