  • When state berths are on the line, it helps to have previous experience. That said, the biggest cheers at district swim meets come when the unexpected happens. That's why Green coach Mike Lazor was jumping all over the deck Saturday at the Northeast district meet at Cleveland State's Busbey Natatorium. Green came in with a small contingent of girls, but ended up winning three individual titles, which was the most of any team in Cleveland. The Bulldogs finished fifth in the team race with 171 points, much to Lazor's delight. "It was unbelievable. It was such an awesome meet for us," Lazor said. "To be in that hunt for a top two for that long in the meet, it just says something about how hard these girls train. They are absolutely incredible young women." Scheibelhoffer had the slowest seed time in the final heat of the 50-yard freestyle, pushing her to outside in lane 9 at Busbey. Senior Olivia Scheibelhoffer shocked the pool, claiming two district titles and a new nickname: "Lane 9." It ended up not mattering, as Scheibelhoffer swam a personal-best 23.53 seconds to place first. Although Scheibelhoffer qualified for the state meet as a sophomore in the 100 backstroke, Lazor chose to switch her to sprints. "I never swam the 50 and the 100 really ever competitively," Scheibelhoffer said. "I just kind of knew I had to go fast. I'm happy with how it turned out." "Just her underwaters, her tenacity and her work in practices, she knew she would have an advantage of the walls and off the start," Lazor said. "We always say, 'Give us a lane and they give us a chance.' They gave Liv Lane 9, and she made the most of it." As if to prove her outside heroics were no fluke, Scheibelhoffer did it again from lane 9 in the 100 freestyle, winning the district title in 52.06 seconds to better her seed time by more than two seconds. "In the 100 free, I can't hold anything back," Scheibelhoffer said. While Scheibelhoffer's sprint double was a great surprise for Green, defending district champion Sydney Peterson was a rock again.Peterson repeated as district champ in the 100 butterfly in 56.37 seconds, improving her seed time by nearly two seconds. She also earned an automatic state berth in the 200 individual medley with a third place finish in 2:10:56.
